Our home base is located in a rural area, along the banks of the Shuswap River, 10 minutes east of the small town of Enderby in the North Okanagan/Shuswap here in BC. We call it "The Homestead" as many years ago it was once part of a large, productive farm. We have been here for over 25 years and have access to hundreds of acres of diverse landscapes.
We are located in what is called a "Bio or Eco Transition" zone. Transition zones are where two diverse landscapes meet. In this case it is the wet interior zone and the dry interior zone of BC. The result is an abundant and diverse variety of plant and animal life - prickly pear cactus, sage, juniper and balsam root co-exist with old growth rain forest. We are within a short distance of the Monashee and Columbia mountains so many mountain plant species are also represented in our area. Many of the plants we study are common weeds found growing around the world, so no matter what geographic location you live in, the plant communities thriving in your area have a very good chance of being represented here.
