"A Walk On The Wild Side" Certificate Program

This program is an Introduction to Traditional Herbalism, explores the edible and medicinal properties of over 30 local plants and teaches you how to make your own herbal medicines and save hundreds of dollars.

"Wise Women's Herbal Intensive" Certificate Program

This more intensive program incorporates our "A Walk on the Wild Side" program, and also explores and emphasizes the "Wise Woman Healing Tradition", herbs for all stages of a womans' life, herbs for children and men, herbal first aid, growing a medicinal herb garden and developing a personal health plan.

"Traditional Herbalism for Men and Women and
The Science and Art of Herbology" Certificate Program

This program delivers the best of our curriculum here at Wild Roots supplemented with Rosemary Gladstar's "The Science and Art of Herbology".

A Walk In The Park

This one day class is for those who do not have the time to commit to one of our certificate programs. We gently forage for easily accessible edible and medicinal weeds and wild plants that can be found growing right in the backyard. Participants will have an opportunity to sample a variety of herbal medicines and we finish the class with a scrumptious dish of seasonal wild, weedy cuisine.

A Liken For Lichens

This six hour workshop introduces these commonly seen, but more commonly overlooked, amazing organisms that are a barometer of environmental integrity, and demonstrates their medicinal and edible properties. The pristine and diverse ecology of the Shuswap affords an ample opportunity to experience and learn about lichens up close and personal.

Workshops

Our 2-6 hour workshops include such topics as Herbal Medicine Making, Herbal Cosmetics, Herbal Therapeutics, Growing A Medicinal Herb Garden, Women's Health Topics, Introduction to the Wise Woman Tradition and Bio-Diversity and Stewardship Workshops.  Workshops can also be customized to your groups needs/interests.

Specialty Tours

These include eco-tours such as our Back Country Plant Tour on Foot or Horseback in the Monashee Mountains.

Class Format (Our Classes):
Learning objectives are clear and classes are experiential, fun, relaxed and informal while at the same time loaded with information - traditional folklore, sound scientific research and of course, our own personal experience. We believe learning is a process and discussions, feedback and questions are welcomed and encouraged. The participants in our programs come from all walks of life and their knowledge and experience becomes part of the curriculum.

While our classes are geared to the adult learner, our curriculum is easily adapted to other learner groups and we can special design a curriculum just for you and  many of our one day workshops are enjoyable for families with young children.

Over fifty percent of class time is spent in the field, providing the opportunity to meet with plants up close and personal in their natural habitats.  We roam riverbanks and creek beds, meadows, marshes, fields, forested hillsides and sub-alpine meadows, backyard gardens, and lawns.  Along the way we not only stop to smell the flowers, we also taste, touch, smell - we enjoy a total sensory experience. We also take time to play - splash in the creek, swim in the river, bath in a waterfall, lie in fields of golden dandelions and sweet smelling clover, rest in shady forest glens. The classes in themselves become a healing experience.

We also co-deliver programs with other health care providers and can put together an exciting program tailor made for you or your group.

Costs:
We believe our classes are very reasonable priced, but if you are unable to afford a class we accept barters, trades and work exchanges. We also offer an Apprenticeship which allows an individual to participate in any and all classes in exchange for service.
Anyone receiving a certificate from our certificate programs is offered a 50% discount to attend a "refresher" class.

Apprenticeships:
Every season we offer an Apprenticeship for one or two students. In exchange for assisting Barbara with the delivery of classes and other duties involved in running the learning Centre we will waive all or part of the program fees for our certificate programs. In addition to reduced fees you will have the opportunity to work one on one with Barbara and accompany her on wild crafting expeditions. As an Apprentice your learning experience will be intense and advanced. For more information about the Apprenticeship position and to submit an application please contact us via e-mail or by phone.
